#ShopSmall: Five Great Mother's Day Gifts from Indie Stores
Posted: Lianne Westwood
I've been meaning to write this post for weeks, but as ever, the blog has been right at the bottom of my to-do list. First there was the dreaded tax return to do. Then the fun job of trade shows and choosing new suppliers and products to add to the website. And of course the on going house renovation (which is really close to finishing, which I'm absolutely dying to show you, but the badly lit photos I've taken so far don't really do it justice...). So here we are, probably too close to Mother's Day for this post to be much help. But I thought I'd write it anyway - there's bound to be a few of you still looking for ideas, and for those of you who aren't, there's always birthdays/Christmas/next year, or even a treat for yourself.
Now obviously we have some pretty great Mother's Day gifts on the site. They're mostly plant based gifts though, great if your Mum has green fingers. Less so if not. There are a lot of non planty gifts as well, but they're very interiors based, and we know not everyone is quite as obsessed as decorating their home with cool stuff as you and I. So below are five gorgeous gifts for your Mum, from some fellow indie businesses, even if your Mum isn't an interiors nut.
First up, and I'll be honest here, I'd really quite like these for myself, is a pair of very gorgeous earrings from Yorkshire based embroidery artist and jeweller, Nook of the Nook. The website is host to a whole load of really gorgeous jewellery (most of which I'd quite like), but with brass having a moment, and with the pretty rose pink just perfect for spring, these earrings would make a lovely Mother's Day gift. I actually bought my sister in law one of the necklaces at Christmas, and can confirm these are even more gorgeous in real life. Plus the packaging is lovely.
I'll be honest (again), I'm not normally that keen on gifts which have 'Mum' written on them. They can be a bit, well, naff. This necklace though, handmade in Sheffield by Upsy Daisy Craft is equal measures cool and cute. It's made from earthenware on a silver plated chain and is also a one off, so you won't see anyone else's Mum wearing it!
Okay, so this is actually two gifts. And it could technically be classed as an interiors gift. But it's also a cake gift and who doesn't like cake. From Lisa Valentine Home, one of my all time favourite indie stores, the cake stand and cake slice can be purchased separately, but they look so good together I don't know why you would. They both have a lovely classic design, meaning they'll be used for years to come, and hey, if your Mum looks after these maybe they'll eventually be handed down to you?! Win win.
Studio Lowen is another great indie biz I've bought from in the past. There's a really gorgeous selection of mostly recycled leather goods, but also some ceramics. I just adore the purses, card holders and glasses cases, many of which have the option of being monogrammed to make them even more special. They're all so pretty, but I just love this botanical print. I confess, when buying a gift from here for somebody else, I may have accidentally bought myself some of the earrings. They're gorgeous too.
Being honest for the third time, things with hearts on them are not normally something I'm that keen on. Again, they can be a bit naff. I do really like like this heart shaped necklace from Cloudy Lemonade though. I like it for many reasons. One, is that it's made from eco friendly recycled silver. Two is that the heart has been cut up and put back together, giving it gorgeous texture. And third is that £1 from the sale of this goes towards MQ: Transforming Mental Health charity. And if hearts aren't really your thing either, there's lots of lovely other recycled silver jewellery to choose from.
So there we have it. Five gorgeous gifts from gorgeous indie businesses that you might also just want to buy yourself!
